Holmskioldia (Theodor Holmskiold, 1732-1794, Danish nobleman and scientist). Verbenaceae. Shrubs, one of which is offered, suitable for growing under glass.

Leaves opposite, entire or dentate: fls. racemose or cymose; calyx membranaceous and colored; corolla cylindric and curved, the oblique limb with 5 short lobes; stamens 4, didynamous, the anthers exserted: fr. an obovoid drupe, 4-lobed, included in the enlarged calyx. Probably 3 species, African and Asian. H. sanguinea, Retz., is a straggling shrub 10-30 ft. high, in the subtropical Himalayan region: lvs. 3 in. long, ovate, acuminate, entire or toothed: corolla 1 in. long, brick-red to orange: drupe 1/3 in. or less long, the calyx 1 in. diam. Offered abroad; an evergreen shrub.
