Rhododendron yanthinum, Franch. (R. concinnum, Hemsl. & Wilson and Hort., not Hemsl. R. Benthamianum, Hemsl. R. atroviride, Dunn). Shrub, to 10 ft.: lvs. ovate-elliptic, acute, rounded or sometimes broadly cuneate at the base, glaucescent and rather densely lepidote beneath, 1 1/4-2 1/2 in. long: fls. 3-6; calyx minute; corolla funnelform-campanulate, 1 1/4 in. long and as broad, purple or rosy purple, sometimes white, glabrous outside, tube about as long as lobes; stamens somewhat shorter than lobes, style longer. June. W. China. Var. lepidanthum, Rehd. & Wilson. Corolla lepidote and pubescent outside, dark purple: lvs. broader. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
