Rhododendron californicum, Hook. Shrub, 8 ft. high, sometimes to 20 ft., glabrous: lvs. oblong, shortly acuminate, pale green beneath, 3-6 in. long, sometimes crowded beneath the fls.: clusters many-fld.; calyx minute; corolla broadly campanulate, with oval crisped lobes, rosy purple or pink, paler toward the center, spotted yellow within, about 2 in. across, rich carmine in bud; stamens 10, with purple anthers; ovary with appressed silky hairs. May, June. Calif. to Brit. Col. B.M. 4863. —R. macrophyllum, Don, and R. washingtonianum, Hort., are probably not different. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
