Begonia metallica, G. Smith. Hairy: sts. perennial, succulent, 4 ft. high, branched: Lvs. obliquely cordate, lobed and serrated, 3-6 in. long, upper surface green, shaded with a dark metallic color: fls. blush-white, under side of petals clothed with red bristly hairs. There are a number of varieties, e. g., var. variegata, var. velutina, var. cyprea, but they do not differ much from the original. Bahia. R.H. 1844:218 (as B. velutina). G.C. II. 5:397.—A very attractive plant.
