Ipomoea jalapa, Lindl. (Batatas jalapa, Choisy). A slender, glabrous, twining vine from a large woody root: lvs. triangular-ovate, entire or 3-lobed, plicate-veined: peduncles usually very short, 1-fld.; sepals sub-equal, broadly ovate; obtuse, ¼ in. long; fls. slender funnel- form, 2-2 ½ in. long, pink or purple. A Mexican species, the roots of which possess purgative powers equal to those of I. Purga. L.B.C. 6:518.—The names of this and I. macrorhiza have been confused from the fact that this plant, figured by Lindley in 1813 (B.M. 1572) as Convolvulus jalapa (I. jalapa, Pursh. as synonym) is not the Carolinian plant described by Pursh under that name in 1814. The plant described by Pursh as I. Jalapa is the I. macrorhiza of Michaux. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
