Read about Iris sambucina in the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture

Iris sambucina, Linn. Differs from I. squalens in its less robust habit, narrower segms. and elder-like odor. The outer segms. are colored and veined with claret not lilac-purple; inner segms. emarginate. Late May. Cent. Eu. B.M. 187. (According to Dykes this figure is probably I. squalens, while plate 787, I. squalens, probably represents 7. sambucina. Both forms are very likely hybrids between I. pallida and I. variegata.)— Tall and handsome.
