Liatris scariosa, Willd. St. stout, 1-5 ft. high: lower leaves epatulate or oblong-lanceolate, 4-6 in. long, 1/2 in. wide; upper narrowly lanceolate: heads large, numerous, in a relatively loose spike; involucral bracts often tinged with purple; flowers purple; pappus bristles minutely barbollate. Throughout the U. S. and Canada, cast of the Rocky Mts. —Next to L. elegans and L. pycnostachya, perhaps the most desirable species for ornamental purposes. ^CH The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
