Ligularia kaempferi, Sieb. & Zucc. (L. Farfugium, C. Koch. Farfugium Kaempferi, Benth. Senecio Kaempferi, DC.). Rhizomatous perennial sending up many leaves on slender flocculent-woolly petioles: leaves large (often 6-10 in. across), orbicular to nearly reniform, cordate at base, angular-toothed, green: fl.-sts. 1-2 ft. tall, flocculent-woolly, branched, with only small, bract-like leaves: heads large, with light yellow rays spreading in. across; pappus white and copious. Japan. Var. aureo-maculatus, Hort. (Farfugium grande. Lindl. F maculatum, Hort.). Leopard Plant. Differs in having the leaves blotched with yellow or white and sometimes with light rose. The variety aureo-maculatus is the only form in general cultured. It was intro. to England in 1856 "from the garden of a mandarin in the north of China" by Fortune. Years ago this was a common plant in conservatories and window-gardens, but of late years it has been neglected. It is, however, a most worthy plant, not only for the house but for bedding in the open in shady places. The plant is hardy as far north as Washington when set permanently in the open. One form has yellow-spotted leaves (the commoner) and another has white-spotted leaves Another form (var. argenteus) has leaves glaucous-green edged with creamy white. Easily propogated by division.
