Stipa tenacissima, Linn. Esparto-Grass. Culms 2-3 ft., in bunches: lvs. narrow, smooth, cylindrical, elongated: panicles contracted; awn 1-2 in., plumose below the bend. Spain and N. Afr.—The lvs. furnish fiber from which are made ropes, mats, paper, and the like. In Afr. it is called halfa or alfa. CH
