Mallotus japonicus, Muell. Arg. (Rottlera japonica, Spreng.). A small, rather scurfy tree with large, ovate, alternate, glabrous or glandular, subtrilobed, reddish lvs.: spikes branched, terminal; fls. 2-3 lines wide; stamens 60-70: caps. ½ in. diam., pubescent with weak prickles. Japan and China. R.H. 1894, p. 103.
