Mammillaria simplex, Haw. Globose or short-cylindric: radial spines 12—17, the middle ones longest; centrals 4—5, somewhat longer, reddish: fl. brownish green without, yellowish or whitish green within: fr. red, 2/3 in. long, clavate; seed brown.—This is the Cactus Mamillaris of Linnaeus and the first species discovered. It has for many years been a desideratum in our collections, although various species have recently been referred to it, like Mammillaria nivosa and M. pusilla. It has recently been re-discovered on the Isl. of Curacao and in N. Venezuela. This is the only species known from the S. American continent.
