Pinus attenuate, Lemm. (P. tuberculata, Gord., not Don. P. californica, Hartw., not Loisel.). Knot-cone Pine. Tree, usually 20, occasionally to 100 ft., with slender horizontal branches ascending at the ends, forming a broad pyramid, with open round-topped head in old age: bark thin, scaly: young branches slender, dark orange - brown : winter buds oblong-ovate, dark brown: lvs. slender, acuminate, pale yellowish or bluish green, 3—7, usually 4-5 in. long: cones short-stalked, usually in clusters, elongated-conical, 3 1/2- 6 in. long, upper scales with pyramidal apex; umbo prominent, sharply pointed and recurved, lower scales with depressed apex and small prickly umbo; seed 1/4 in. long. Ore. to Calif. S.S. 11:575, 576. G.G. II. 24:784, 785. G.M. 56:255. F.S. 5, p. 517c.—Of little ornamental value and not hardy N. Usually a bushy tree with sparse dull foliage. Group 12.
