Pinus densiflora, Sieb. & Zucc. Japanese Red Pine. Tree, to 100 ft., with spreading branches forming an irregular, rather broad head: branchlets orange-yellow, bloomy: buds oblong-ovate, chestnut-brown: lvs. slender, acute, bright bluish green, 21/2-5 in. long: cones short-stalked, conic-ovate to oblong, grayish brown, somewhat oblique at the base, about 2 in. long; apophysis flattened and slightly ridged, those near the base sometimes elongated; umbo small, with a short prickle or obtuse; seed grayish yellow, 1/4 in. long. Japan. S.Z.2:112. S.I.F. 1:1. Gn.M. 2:22.—Ornamental hardy tree, rapidly growing when young, often very picturesque when older. Many garden forms are cult, in Japan, several of them with variegated lvs. The best are perhaps var. umbraculifera, Mayr, a low form with horizontally spreading branches forming a flat head; var. pendula, Mayr, with pendulous branches; var. aurea, Mayr, with yellow foliage; var. albo-terminata, Mayr, with the tips of the lvs. yellowish white, and var. Oculus-draconis, Mayr, like var. variegata, Mayr, similar to the varieties, of the same name under P. Thunbergii. (No. 28.) CH
