Knowltonia (Thos. Knowlton, 1692-1781, curator of the botanic garden at Eltham, England). Ranunculaceae. By some referred to Anemone, but differs in having 5 sepals and numerous petals, and the carpels soft and fleshy: species 8 or so in S. Afr., sometimes mentioned as half-hardy or as greenhouse subjects, but apparently not in the trade. Stemless perennial herbs, with large ternately decompound rigid radical lvs., no involucre, numerous 1-seeded carpels which become thick and juicy at maturity, and greenish or yellowish fls. on branching cymose or umbellate scapes. K. vesicatoria, Sims, with lvs. 1 ft. or more across, green fls. and blackish purple berries: lf.-segms. nearly entire or only serrulate: ovaries as long as the subulate style. B.M. 775. B.R. 936. K. rigida, Salisb., with lvs. rather smaller, segms. sharply serrate, and ovaries shorter than the subulate style: variable. H.F. II. 7:72.
