Strong forking herb or subshrub, blooming when 1 or 2 ft. high, but becoming several feet high if allowed to grow: sts. 4-angled: lvs. opposite, lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate to oval-oblong, narrow or broad at base, attenuate to apex, wavy-margined, veiny, downy, sometimes a foot long: fls. rose-purple (varying to flesh-colored), ascending, arched at the top and the lower lip recurving, borne in dense terminal spike-like thyrses.
