Leaves ovate-cordate, denticulate, sinus deep; tendrils simple: fls. dioecious, rather large, golden yellow; male fls. solitary or racemose, calyx-tube short-campanulate, 5-lobed, corolla rather irregularly campanulate, 5-parted, stamens 5, ovary rudimentary; female fls. solitary, calyx and corolla as in the male, stamens rudimentary or none; ovary oblong, pubescent, with 3 placentae: fr. oblong, fleshy, indehiscent, many-seeded. —About 13 species, China, Java, and Himalayas.
