Veronica officinalis, Linn. (V. Allionii, F. W. Schmidt, not Vill.). Common Speedwell. Fluellen. Ground-Hele. Prostrate, leafy native with a pubescent st. rooting at the nodes, slender, 6-18 in. long: lvs. elliptic, oblong or broadly oblong, 1/2 - 1 in. and more long, hairy, serrate at base, evergreen, retaining color where most exposed: racemes slender, densely many-fld.: fls. pale blue, rarely pink, sessile: caps. broader than long, wedge-shaped, broadly notched, hairy, exceeding the hairy sepals. May-July. Forests and mountains of Eu. and N. Amer. —Grows under trees and in shade where no grass will grow, covering the ground with a permanent sod. Spreads rapidly and is easily grown. Prop. by cuttings.
