Upright shrub with spreading branches, to 10 ft.: branchlets stellate-pubescent: lvs. obovate to rhombic- or obovate-oblong, acute or acutish, rarely short-acuminate, cuneate at the base, sinuately toothed above the middle, 3-nerved at the base and with 1 or 2 pairs more of lateral veins, glabrous above, pubescent on the veins beneath, 1 – 2 1/2 in. long; petiole 1/4 – 1/3 in. long: fls. white, in cymes 2-4 in. across on lateral spreading branchlets: fr. scarlet, ovoid, 1/4 in. long. June. Himalayas, S. W. China. Var. rectangulum, Rehd. (V. rectangulum, Graebn.). Shrub, to 12 ft., with spreading, often pendulous branches: lvs. oblong-obovate to lanceolate, acuminate, remotely dentate or denticulate, usually nearly glabrous, 1 1/2 - 3 in. long: cymes on slender, lateral branchlets often spreading at right angles. W. China.
