Tree, to 100 ft. high, with broad, pyramidal head: branches purplish: lvs. obovate to obovate-oblong, obtusely pointed, glaucous and appressed pubescent beneath, 8-14 in. long: fls. 6-7 in. across, cup- shaped, fragrant, with 6-9 petals; stamens with purple filaments: fr. oblong-cylindric, scarlet, to 8 in. long. The name M. hypoleuca is used here, instead of the oldest name, M. obovata, to avoid confusion, as the latter name has been applied erroneously by most botanists to the plant named here M. liliflora (for further remarks on the nomenclature of this and other species, see Sargent, Plant.
