rather stout compressed prickles, on the shoots mixed with bristles:
lfts. 5-11, oval or obo- vate, to elliptic - oblong, usually broadly
cuneate at the base, finely serrate, glabrous, 1/3-3/4in. long: fls. 2
1/2 in. across, yellow, solitary on slender glabrous pedicels; sepals
lanceolate: fr. depressed- globose, deep scarlet. May, June; fr. Aug.
