Monarda fistulosa. Linn. Wild Bergamot. Sometimes called bergamot in nursery catalogues, but the bergamot of the Old World is Mentha odorata. St. mostly obtusely angled: lvs. firmer: fls. purple, usually not so numerous as M. didyma. July, later than M. didyma. Var. rubra, Gray. Fls. crimson or rosy red. Var. media, Gray (var. purpurea, Hort.). Fls. deep purple. Var. purpurea, Pursh. The deep purplish crimson fls. are smaller. L.B.C. 14:1396. Var. mol1is, Benth. (M. mollis, Linn.). Fls. flesh-color to lilac. B.M. 2958 (as M. menthaefolia).—Will grow in dry positions.
