Myrciaria (name probably related to Myrtus). Myrtaceae. Brazilian trees and shrubs, of which several species are cultivated for their fruits; sometimes united with Eugenia.
Leaves opposite, entire: fls. sessile or nearly so, axillary, clustered, rarely solitary or in panicles; calyx 4-lobed; petals 4, perigynous, inserted opposite the sepals, deciduous; stamens many; filaments free, filiform; anthers oval or oblong, dehiscing longitudinally; style filiform; stigma simple, rarely capitate; ovary inferior, bilocular, with 2 ovules in each locule; disk small, rarely crowned by the persistent sepals: fr. a berry; seeds 1-4, embryo exalbuminous.—Probably 50 and more species.
