Tulipa kaufmanniana, Regel. Less than 12 in. high: lvs. 2-3; perianth subcampanulate, 2-3 in. long, 2 1/2- 4 in. across, bright yellow in original form, tinged with red outside, without basal blotch; in cult. very variable in color, often cream-white, and nearly always with a deep yellow basal blotch; anthers lemon-yellow, linear; filaments bright orange, linear flattened; ovary pyramidal; stigmas small in cult. form, but described as large. Turkestan Var. aurea, Hort. Segms. of perianth red, with yellow markings outside and entirely yellow or orange-yellow inside. Var. coccinea, Hort. Fls. rich brilliant scarlet, at the base clear yellow.—T. Kaufmanniana is a handsome and valuable species, blooming exceptionally early. Sometimes called "water-lily tulip” from the resemblance of the partially opened fls. to those of nymphea. CH
