Weldenia (for Ludwig von Welden, an Austrian army officer, wrote on natural history; 1780-1853). Commelinaceae. Tuberous-rooted herb, suitable for the greenhouse: lvs. numerous, grouped at the top of the st., forming a sort of involucre about the fls.: cymes very densely fasciculate, sessile among the lvs.; calyx sessile, 1 1/2 in. or less long, membranaceous, long and laxly tubular, often spathe-like, split, apex shortly 3-cleft; corolla-tube slender, much longer than the calyx, lobes broad, spreading, subequal; stamens 6; ovary ovoid. — One species. W. candida, Schult. f. St. short, simple: lvs. 6-8, strap-shaped, 2-6 in. long, with folding bases, pale green: fls. snow-white, 1 in. diam., solitary on erect scapes. Mex. and Guatemala. B.M. 7405.
