Centaurea atropurpurea, Waldst. & Kit. (C.calocephala, Willd.). Perennial: sts. erect, branched, about 2-3 ft. high, the branches white-woolly at the summit: lvs. bipinnate, lobes linear-lanceolate, acuminate; lowest lvs. petioled, uppermost pinnatifid: fl.-heads without bracts; involucral scales with fringed ciliate white lanceolate tips, the innermost ones rounded, scarious-margined; fls. black-purple. Hungary. CH
