Coriaria japonica, Gray. Fig. 1057. Shrub, 2-3, sometimes to 10 ft.: branches quadrangular: lvs. nearly sessile, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, 3-nerved, smooth, 2-4 in. long: fls. in axiliary racemes from the branches of last year: fr. becoming bright, red in summer, changing to violet black when ripe.
