Salix rubens, Schrank (S. alba x S. fragilis. S. Russelliana, Smith. S. viridis, Fries). Intermediate between the parents. Tree; branchlets less fragile at the base than S. fragilis: lvs. silky when young, glabrous at maturity, intermediate in size: stalk of caps. longer than in S. alba. Occurs frequently between the parents. Var. palustris, Schneid. (S. palustris, Hort.). Silky pubescence of lvs. persisting. The above text is from the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture.
