Gladiolus tristis, Linn. Very like the last: fls. 2-4, somewhat smaller (2 in. or less long); segms. shorter than the tube and not twice longer than the stamens, acute (short- pointed), yellowish white with purple or blackish pen- cilings, or var. concolor, Hort., Fig. 1648 (G. concolor, Salisb.), almost white or uniform yellow. S. Afr. B.M. 272, 1098. G. 21:649. Gn. 75, p. 420. G.C. III. 38:187 (Var. concolor). G.F. 8:75 (reproduced in Fig. 1648). —Said to exhale a powerful and delightful lemon perfume at night.
