Pholidocarpus (Greek, scale and fruit: the fruit is covered with a scaly coat). Palmaceae. A palm of the oriental tropics. Trunk tall: lvs. orbicular, 4-5- parted; petiole spinous: fr. globose or ovoid with a tessellated pericarp; seed laterally inserted. About 5 species, Malaya, all very imperfectly known. One species, P. Ihur, Blume, is sometimes grown in the warm- house and may be suitable for outdoor growth in S. Calif. This has lvs. similar to those of Borassus flabel- lifer, the petioles are armed with stout spines, the spadix loosely branched and the drupe ovoid, about as large as a fair-sized hen's egg, the rind rugose and tessellated and has 3-4 seeds.
