Silene virginica, Linn. Fire Pink. Fig. 3618. Perennial, 1 - 2 ft. high, viscid-pubescent: sts. striate, single, simple: lvs. spatulate or oblanceolate, the lower narrowed to ciliate-fringed petioles, the upper sessile: fls. very large, 1 in. or more across; crimson or scarlet, loosely cymose, commonly nodding or reflexed after anthesis; calyx clavate or oblong; petals broadly lanceolate, 2 (rarely 4) -toothed at the apex.
