The name applied to the outer impervious mostly not-living part of the [[bark]]. Most bark, develops a corky exterior, and in some cases it becomes very prominent. In ''[[Enonymous thunbergianus]]'', the English maple, the [[corky barked elm]], and other [[tree]]s and [[shrub]]s, it forms wings on the branches. The cork of commerce comes from the bark of ''[[Quercus ilex]]'' (better known as ''Q. Suber''), plantations of which grow in southwestern Europe. The cork tree of the catalogues, ''[[Phellodendron amurense]]'', is a curious tree, cultivated for ornament.
