A large shrub or small tree, 10-30 ft. high: branches stout: buds large, flattened against the branch: lvs. oblong-lanceolate, green on both sides, finely serrate, glabrous and rather rigid at maturity: aments rather slender, appearing with the lvs.: caps. glabrous, greenish or brownish. N. Amer.— This is a variable species and undoubtedly some of the forms included in it are hybrids; several supposed natural hybrids have been described. Var. pendula, Hort., is a decumbent form.
