Calophaca (Greek, kalos, beautiful, and phaka, lentil). Leguminosae. Ornamental plants cultivated chiefly for their bright yellow flowers appearing in summer.
Deciduous shrubs or herbs, with alternate, odd-pinnate, pubescent, and often glandular lvs.: stipules scarious or herabceous, adnate to the petiole: fls. papilionaceous, solitary or in racemes; calyx tubular with 5 nearly equal teeth; standard upright: wings oblong, free, as long as keel; ovary sessile with many ovules: pod pubescent and glandular, cylindrical.—About 10 species from S. Russia to E. India.
The two cultivated species are low, prostrate shrubs, with grayish green foliage, and rather large yellow flowers in erect axillary racemes, followed by decorative reddish pods. They prefer a well-drained soil and sunny position, and are well adapted for borders of shrubberies and sandy or rocky slopes. Propagated by seeds sown in spring; the young seedlings should have plenty of light and air, as they are very liable to damp-off if kept too moist and shady. Sometimes grafted high on Caragana or Laburnum, forming a very attractive small standard tree with pendulous branches.
