Lilium concolor, Salisb. Star Lily. Bulb cespitose, similar to that of L. Wallacei: st. 1 - 1/2 ft. high, green, tinged purple, slightly pubescent: leaves 20-30, erect or semi-horizontal, 1 1/2 - 3 in. long, 1/12 - 1/8 in. wide: flowers 1-4, 2-3 in. diam., bright crimson-scarlet, slightly, or not at all, dotted purple-black; anthers red. Late June, July. Japan. —A graceful, handsome lily of easy culture, excellent for both pots and open ground. Var. Partheneion, Sieb. & De Vr., is very similar, if not identical. Var. Coridion, Sieb. & De Vr., produces slightly larger flowers of a rich yellow, flaked brown.—L. pulchellum, Fisch. & Mey. (L. Buschianum, Lodd.), is allied to L. concolor, but differs from it in the bulb being solitary and more oval, the leaves slightly wider and of a deeper green, the flowers appearing earlier, slightly smaller and more thickly spotted. S. E. Siberia and Manchuria. Var. luteum. Hort., from Mongolia, produces rich yellow, spotted flowers—L. sinicum, Lindl., resembles L. pulchellum, but grows 2-3 ft. high and produces 4-6 larger flowers China and S. Siberia.
