Tolmiea menziesii, Torr. & Gray (Leptaxis Menziesii, Raf.). Perennial herb, 1-2 ft. high, with slender creeping root-stocks and some summer runners: lvs. round-cordate, more or less lobed and crenately toothed, slender-stalked, all alternate, those of the st. 2-4 in number: raceme 3/4 – 1 1/2 ft. long: fls. and caps. nearly 1/2 in. long, greenish or tinged purple. Forests of Mendocino Co., Calif., to Puget Sound. — Prop. naturally by adventitious buds, produced at the apex of the petioles of the radical lvs. and rooting when these fall to the ground.

The plant is most interesting for its reproductive habits. It grows plantlets from the petiole near the base of each leaf. The plantlets drop off, fall in the soil, and take root there. It will also reproduce by rhizome and by seed propagation.
