Shrub or small tree, glabrous, with stout spreading prickles in pairs: lvs. 3-8 in. long, with conspicuously winged sometimes prickly rachis; lfts. 5-11, elliptic-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, rarely obovate-oblong, acuminate, finely serrulate or nearly entire, 1 1/2 - 5 in. long, the terminal one the largest: fls. in short lateral panicles, 1 – 2 1/2 in. long, from the axils of last year's branches: fr. red, warty.
