Rhododendron calendulaceum, Torr. (R. luteum, Schneid., not Sweet. Azalea calendulacea, Michx. A. lutea, Linn., partly. A. aurantiaca, Dietr. A. speciosa, Willd.). Flame-Colored Azalea. From 4-10 ft.: branchlets glabrous or with stiff hairs: lvs. obovate or ovate, usually pubescent beneath, serrulate-ciliate : fls. orange-yellow to orange-red or flame-red, often 2 in. broad, with the lvs., nearly scentless; tube usually shorter than the limb; stamens thickened at the middle. May, June. E. N. Amer. C.L.A. 11:496. Gn. 29, p. 550.
