Climbing to 20 ft., evergreen: lfts. 3-5, sometimes 7, elliptic-ovate to oblong-lanceolate, acute or obtusish, finely serrate, shining, glabrous except at the base of midrib beneath: fls. on slender, smooth pedicels in many-fld. umbels, white or yellow, about 1 in. across, slightly fragrant. May, June. Cent, and W. China. G.G. III. 31:439. J.H.S. 27:501. Var. albo-plena, Rehd., with double white fls. B.M. 1954. Var. lutea. Lindl. (var. luteo-plena, Rehd.), with double yellow fls. B.R. 1105. Var. lutes- cens, Voss, with single yellow fls. B.M. 7171. Var. normilis, Regel, with single white fis. is the wild form.—Intro, first into Eu. by Wm. Kerr, in 1807 in the double white form; the double yellow form was intro. about 1825, while the single white and yellow forms were not known until 40 or 50 years later.
