Rosa acicularis, Lindl. Sts. low, densely prickly: lfts. 3-7, broadly elliptic to narrowly oblong, rounded at base, simply or doubly serrate pubescent beneath, 1/2 - 2 in. long: fls. solitary, deep rose, 1 1/2 - 2 in. across, "fragrant; sepals entire and nearly glabrous: fr. usually pyriform, 1/2 - 1 in. long. May, June. Alaska to Ont. and Colo., N. Eu., N. Asia, Japan. B.B. (ed. 2) 2:283.—A very variable species. Var. Bourgeauiana, Crepin (R. Sayi, Schwein. R. acicularis var.Sayi, Rehd.).Fig. 3453. Lfts.glandular and pubescent beneath, usually somewhat doubly glandular-serrate: fls.larger, often 2 1/2 in. across: fr. usually globular. Ont. to Brit. Col. and Colo. Var. Engelmanni, Crepin in herb.(R. Engelmanni, Wats.). Fig. 3454. Similar to the preceding: lfts. distinctly doubly glandular-serrate:fr.oblong, to 1 in. long. Colo, to Brit. Col. G.F. 2:377 (adapted in Fig. 3454). Var. nipponensis, Hook. f. Lfts. smaller, 1/2 - 3/4. long; petioles bristly: branchlets and pedicels glandular-hispid: fls. 1 1/2 in. across. Japan. B.M. 7646.
