Scape (sent up in early spring) preceding the Lvs., 3-4 ft., dark-colored and speckled with light red: If. often 4 ft. across, pedately decompound, the petiole mottled, standing on a stalk like an umbrella: spathe rosy, calla-like, with a long-projecting and slender, dark red, slightly curved spadix, the whole "flower" often measuring 3 ft. long.
