Tricholaena (Greek for hair and mantle, referring to the covering of silky hairs on the spikelets). Gramineae. Allied to Panicum: spikelets loosely paniculate, clothed with long silky hairs; first glume minute, remote from the second; second glume and sterile lemma 2-lobed, a slender awn from between the lobes.—Species 10, all African, 1 extending to the Medit. region and 2 to India. CH
