recently elected to the board of my co-op and seem to be in charge of the ornamental garden in front of the building. learning as i go and could use all the help i can get.

Hi Travis - the best for the plant is to not prune until after the winter (waiting until you transplant is fine). The old growth will serve as a means of protecting the plants from the deep cold of winter. If you do a little trimming though for aesthetic reasons, the plant should be fine. Hydrangeas are quite cold tolerant at the root level.
