Viburnum lantana, Linn. Wayfaring Tree. Upright shrub or sometimes small tree, attaining 20 ft.: young branches scurfy-pubescent: lvs. ovate or oblong-ovate, usually cordate at base, acute or obtuse, sparingly stellate-pubescent and wrinkled above, tomentose beneath, denticulate, 2-4 in. long: fls. white: cymes dense, 2-3 in. broad, with usually 7 rays: fr. ovoid-oblong, bright red, changing to almost black. May, June. Eu., W. Asia. A.G. 18:453 and F.E. 9:593 (as V. lantanoides). H.W. 3, p. 131. Gn. 61, p. 324.—Hardy shrub, especially for drier situations and limestone soil. Var. rugosum, Hort. With larger and very wrinkled lvs. and larger cymes. There are a number of other varieties, including some with variegated lvs.
