Stachys officinalis, Franch. (S. Betonica, Benth. Betonica officinalis, Linn.). Betony. Fig. 3671. A hardy perennial herb 1-3 ft. high: lower lvs. long-petioled, ovate-oblong, crenate, obtuse, cordate at the base, 3-6 in. long; upper lvs. distant, sessile, oblong-lanceolate, acute: fls. purple, in a dense, terminal spike. July. Eu., Asia Minor. —Rarely found as an escape in this country, and once cult. for use in domestic medicine. Useful for ornament, and now advertised for that purpose. There are white-fld. forms of the species offered in the trade under the names of S. Betonica alba and S. Betonica albiflora and there is also a large-fld. form with soft rose-colored fls. known as S. Betonica grandiflora. CH
