Acanthomintha sessiliflorum, Seem. (Panax sessiliflorum, Rupr. & Max.). Shrub with stout upright branches, to 12 ft.: branches with only few prickles: lfts. mostly 3, obovate-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, cuneate, acuminate, 3-7 in. long, irregularly crenate-serrate, nearly smooth: fls. dull purplish, nearly sessile, in globular heads on stout, downy peduncles, usually several at the end of the branches. Manchuria, n. China. G.C. III. 22:339. Gt. 11:369.—The freely produced heads of black berries are decorative. Var. parviceps, Rehd. Lower and denser: lvs. elliptic, 2-3 in. long: heads smaller, usually solitary. CH
