Achlys (the goddess of obscurity). Berberidaceae. Hardy herbaceous perennial allied to the may-apple, and sometimes so called where wild. Lvs. all radical, with 3 lfts.: fls. minute, apetalous, numerous, spicate, on a slender scape: fr. very small, at first pulpy but becoming dry.—Species 2, one of them Japanese. CH
