Silene asterias, Griseb.; also misspelled Asteris. Perennial, glabrous, 3-4 ft. high: sts. tall, simple, rather viscid: lvs. lanceolate-spatulate, 4-5 in. long, obtuse, base attenuate; the uppermost oblong, elliptic-lanceolate: fls. purple, subsessile, in a many-fld., capitate cyme; calyx membranaceous, reddish, obconic-cylindrical; petals oblong, entire: caps. oblong. Macedonia and Roumania. Var. grandiflora, Hort., is about 3 ft. high and has the crimson-scarlet fls. in globose heads. Balkan Mts. CH
