Lavatera (one of the Lavater family of Zurich, at the time of Tournefort). Malvaceae. Flower-garden annuals and biennials, and some ornamental shrubs, the taller known as tree mallows. Herbs, shrubs and trees, tomentose or hairy: leaves angled or lobed, sometimes maple-like: flowers sometimes 2-4 in. across, variously colored, rarely yellow, solitary in the axils or borne in terminal racemes; column of stamens divided at the summit into an indefinite number of filaments; petals 5; ovaries few to many, united about an axis which is conical or umbrella-shaped at top; fl.-bractlets 3-6 or 9, joined into an involucre.— Species about 25, mostly in the Medit. region, but extending to the Canaries, Asia, Austral., and the islands off S. and Lower Calif. These plants are of the easiest culture, the first species being the commonest, and all propagated by seeds. There seem to be no double forms. CH
