Lewisia formosa, Wall. (L. elegans, Hort.?). Strong-growing, with fistular (hollow) branches, 6 ft.: leaves broadly ovate to ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, entire or toothed, more or less puberulous beneath: flowers purplish, fascicled in whorls in drooping leafy spikes or spike-like racemes: fruits dark red, subglobose. Himalaya, 5,000-10,000 ft., to W. China. Grown in England and apparently in Calif. Var. variegata, Hort., has variegated foliage. Var. rosea, Hort., has rose-colored flowers. CH
