Liatris scariosa, Willd. St. stout, 1-5 ft. high: lower leaves epatulate or oblong-lanceolate, 4-6 in. long, 1/2 in. wide; upper narrowly lanceolate: heads large, numerous, in a relatively loose spike; involucral bracts often tinged with purple; flowers purple; pappus bristles minutely barbollate. Throughout the U. S. and Canada, cast of the Rocky Mts. —Next to L. elegans and L. pycnostachya, perhaps the most desirable species for ornamental purposes. CH
